Operation Hamper
Published 01 December 2011
Operation Hamper has now been launched in Jersey to help support the elderly for Christmas. Jersey Islanders are being invited to help make Christmas more cheerful by donating food which some OAPs might find difficult to afford.
Collection points include the Town Hall, all Parish halls, and Sandpiper stores which include Checkers Xpress, Iceland, Food Halls and Marks & Spencers.
Age Concern Jersey chairman Daphne Minihane said today the appeal was a wonderful gesture by Sandpiper which would come at just the right time for the vulnerable older people. She went on to say that the appeal had written to the parish halls, OAP clubs and others in the community who knew elderly people in need of support to find those who would benefit most from receiving a hamper.
More than a dozen Schools are also encouraging their pupils to take part for this worthy cause. It is hoped to make at least 250 hampers which will be distributed next month.
Sandpiper's Operations Director Peter Clarke said that the firm had been working with Mrs Minihane and Age Concern Jersey for some time.
"I'm delighted that our staff have gone a stage further by coming up with the idea of Operation Hamper and carrying it out, " he said.
