Checkers links up with Shaun Rankin
Checkers was recently proud to welcome Shaun Rankin, the Michelin-starred Head Chef of Bohemia restaurant in St Helier when he tantalised shoppers tastebuds with a live cookery demonstration at our St Saviour store on 26 September.
He showed shoppers just how to rustle up tasty evening suppers such as his delicious lamb with Moroccan-style couscous; grilled sirloin steak with griddled asparagus and lemon; and sweet chilli and garlic chicken with pasta - all recipes using ingredients available in Checkers - whilst inviting them to regularly taste the dishes as they were being prepared and explaining that he and his wife were regular shoppers at Rue des Pres because he particularly liked the newly introduced British meat range.
A passionate advocate of fresh, British and local food, Shaun recently represented the south-west in the fourth series of BBC Two's Great British Menu, for which he cooked the winning dessert. His winning dish was Treacle tart with Jersey clotted cream and raspberry coulis.
Shaun’s treacle tart is now produced for sale by Sandpiper company, Cimandis, and, since its launch, has received a more than enthusiastic reception from shoppers and has been flying off the shelves of our Checkers stores as a result.
Checkers stores at both Red Houses and Rue des Pres have recently undergone major upgrades to improve customers’ shopping experience. The stores have been rebranded, redecorated, layouts improved and the introduction of new British meats and fresh produce to provide even better choice to existing and new customers.
SandpiperCI CEO Tony O’Neill said: “ongoing investment into our retail estate has proved a winning formula, we are welcoming new customers every week as we improve our ranges and quality. A recent British lamb promotion improved our meat sales more than tenfold which demonstrates the success our new stores are experiencing.”
Checkers in Guernsey is also being refurbished and will relaunch at the end of November.
