Exciting news at Benest!

In 1888, William Le Bas Benest, founder of Benests, bought what was then a small family grocer and provision merchant near Millbrook Corner from two Le Couteur sisters. It is not known when the site was first used as a food retail shop, but it's probably one of the oldest in Jersey.

On Tuesday 7th April 2009, a new chapter begins for the store, which is now owned by SandpiperCI, as it reopens after being totally refurbished throughout. The old centre structure has been removed allowing for new long clear line layouts. The store will have a new fresh fish counter, post office and the popular in-store butcher has been substantially upgraded. In addition, customers can now choose to have their groceries delivered (min spend £25) to their homes free of charge. Benests was the first food retailer to have an inhouse pharmacist; the refurbished store retains the pharmacy and now incorporates private consulting rooms.

Tony O'Neill, Sandpiper's CEO said: "This is one of our most successful stores and has always been supported by a loyal clientele. Benests refurbishment continues our on-going retail upgrade programme and I'm delighted to bring this historic store up to modern standards." The store was reopened by St Lawrence Constable, Deidre Mezbourian. She will meet shoppers who have been using the store for more than 45 years and regularly uses the store herself.
